This Sunday we started Allie's obedient training. I have finally had enough. Matt and I thought we could do it on our own but after two and a half years we decided we needed help. Those of you who don't know my dog, she has a tendency to be a little hyper, unfocused and pretty much nuts. Of course these are all traits of a lab but according to the trainer they can be fixed.
So anyway, she started yesterday and she did surprisingly well. We are mainly working on getting her to focus on us and establishing that we are the leaders and her existence is only because we say so. Here are a few tips we were told on how to establish yourself as the leader of the pack.
How to be the leader of the pack:
1. You should always enter/exit doors first and only allow her to come in/go out when you say so.
2. You should eat first or at least have her eat in a different room than you.
3. If you are walking through a room and your dog is in your path, do not go around her but walk right through her bumping her out of the way.
4. Put her in a crate for a few minutes each day while you are home and do not let her out until she is calm. This establishes that you are in control and that she has to behave to gain her freedom.
Thought these were interesting and hadn't really ever thought of them. The training is 6 weeks so hopefully next time you see us we will have a calm well behaved dog, not the maniac we are living with now.
